AHDB Beef and Lamb crowns winners at awards to celebrate excellence

29 May 2015

The highly anticipated results of AHDB Beef and Lamb' three competitions to find ‘England’s Best Sirloin Steak’, ‘England’s Best Innovative Steak’ and ‘England’s Best Steak Pie’ were announced last night (22 April 2015) at the inaugural AHDB Beef and Lamb Quality Standard Mark Excellence Awards which took place at the Underglobe in London.

AHDB Beef and Lamb crowns winners at awards to celebrate excellenceThe three competitions, which assessed different aspects of quality steak production, were open to multiple retailers and their suppliers, independent retail butchers and farm shops, catering butchers and manufacturers supplying the foodservice industry.

Mike Whittemore, head of trade marketing for AHDB Beef and Lamb, said: "We’re thrilled with how successful the Quality Standard Mark Excellence Awards has been. We introduced the Awards to stimulate product development, as well as to recognise and reward quality, innovation and excellence in beef and lamb production and we have seen some really fantastic products throughout the judging process.

"Competitions like this really help to drive quality and innovation throughout the beef and lamb industry, and it’s been great to see just how many quality products are coming through. What was particularly encouraging was to see the number of added value cuts in the Innovative Steak competition.

"A key part of the AHDB Beef and Lamb trade team’s role is to help the beef and lamb industry become more efficient and derive greater value from the carcase. In recent months we developed a range of steaks from the forequarter and other underutilised primals; the Flat Iron and Denver steaks have proved particularly successful and we have seen a number of these entered into the Awards, which is fantastic.”

Hugh Judd, competition organiser and foodservice project manager, for AHDB Beef and Lamb, said: "We launched the Quality Standard Mark Excellence Awards to find the very best steak products in the country and I believe we have done just that!

"The number and variety of quality steak products entered into all three of the competitions was impressive, and all those that made it to the final and achieved awards were very deserving. We’re encouraging all the winners to make the most of their awards by promoting them in store, on menus and on point-of-sale material, as we know from experience that it really will have a positive impact on sales.”
