Gog Magog Hills Farm Shop crowned Overall Winner of ‘England’s Best Burger Challenge 2014’

Gog Magog Hills Farm Shop crowned Overall Winner of ‘England’s Best Burger Challenge 2014’BLEX’s search to find ‘England’s Best Burger 2014’ has come to an end as the much sought after title was awarded to Gog Magog Hills Farm Shop for its ‘Magog Marrow Burger’.

As winner of the ‘Independent Retail Butcher’ category, Cambridge based Gog Magog Hills Farm Shop was up against the three other category winners in the final stage of the competition. The other finalists were:

  • Multiple Retailer: Wm Morrison Supermarkets plc with its ‘M Signature Ultimate Brisket Burger’
  • Foodservice: Owen Taylor & Sons, with its ‘Owen Taylor Champion Lamb Burger’
  • Premium Quality Innovative Burger: ABP Doncaster with its ‘Asda Extra Special Wagyu Beef Burger’

All four category winning burgers were outstanding, but the 'Magog Marrow Burger' achieved the highest score overall. Following the announcement, Gog Magog Hills Farm Shop’s managing director, Charles Bradford, said: "This is fantastic news and a real testament to the quality of our burgers. We use Quality Standard Mark beef in our 'Magog Marrow Burger' and keep the ingredients simple to let the quality of the meat stand out. We can’t wait to tell our customers that we sell England’s Best Burger!”

The 'Magog Marrow Burger' was developed by butcher Oliver Anstee in a bid to impress his friends with his burger recipe. Charles added: "Ollie joined us five years ago as an apprentice and he is a rising star. Coming from a farming family, he has a real passion for food and for the meat industry in particular. He is incredibly talented and very hard working, I’m so proud of him – and all our team!

"I’m also really grateful for the support we’ve had from our loyal customers. We’ve worked hard to grow and develop our business and the feedback they’ve given us along the way has been invaluable. Winning this award is phenomenal for us and we want all our customers to celebrate with us!”

Hugh Judd, EBLEX foodservice project manager, said: "The judges were really impressed with all four category winning burgers in the final round, but the ‘Magog Marrow Burger’ was exceptionally good and a worthy winner of the competition. The quality of the meat used was excellent and the balance of flavours was just right – making it a fantastic quality burger.”

Hugh added: "This year has been the most successful in the competition’s history. Not only did we receive more entries than ever before but the standard of burger entries was really impressive. The introduction of the ‘Premium Quality Innovative Burgers’ category boosted the amount of burger entries made using single muscle cuts, which produced some really high quality burgers. The trend for premium burgers continues to grow and it’s fantastic to see so many great products out there”.
